Neon Genesis Evangelion

I’m not big into Anime, but there’s something about this show that just clicks with me.

I haven’t watched an episode for a few days due to school and work and life and blah blah, and I’m not far enough in the series to know exactly what’s going on, so I’ll let wikipedia provide the synopsis:

Evangelion is an apocalyptic mecha action series which centers around the efforts by the paramilitary organization Nerv to fight monstrous beings called Angels, primarily using giant mecha called Evangelions which are piloted by select teenagers, one of whom is the primary protagonist.

Events in the series refer to Judeo-Christian symbols from the book of Genesis and Biblical apocrypha among others. Later episodes shift focus to psychoanalysis of the main characters, who display various emotional problems and mental illnesses; the nature of existence and reality are questioned in a way that lets Evangelion be characterized as “postmodern fantasy”. Hideaki Anno, the director of the anime series, suffered from clinical depression prior to creating the series, and the psychological aspects of the show are based on the director’s own experiences with overcoming this illness.

The show is a blast to watch—the imagery transports me to some nostalgic dream-scape I’ve never seen but know too well. Futuristic Tokyo is simultaneously comfortable, eerie, dull, coddled, strange, mysterious and beautiful. The main characters introverted nature and reflective tenancies make him far more dynamic than most real-life characters, and the show’s use of silence and space make each episode a lot less action-oriented (and much more thought-inducing) than you’d expect it to be.

I have quite a few episodes to get through—I’ll update you after I make a substantial dent.

Here are some grabs. I went through the first four episodes with brazen speed and stupidity and chose them at whim. The fact that they’re as good-looking as they are in spite of my lack of temperance is a testament to the show’s incredible art.
